In the Hand of the Great Poet, George Herbert, himself.

This book contains about one-third of Herbert's English poems, some of his secular Latin poetry, and several essays. The table of contents was rather odd and hard to follow as it was comparing the William's manuscript with the Bodleian manuscript. The English poems are the facsimile of the original done in Herbert's own writing. What makes this unique is that it shows which poems were the most important to him and the order in which he felt they should be presented. The weakness here is that we do not know for sure the actual chronological order in which they were written. Dr. John Drury, in his new biography on Herbert makes compelling arguments for the possible order of the poems and the context in his fine biography of Herbert: see - "Music at Midnight: The Life and Poetry of George Herbert."
I do have to admit that, similar to the facsimile of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience", the text can be rather difficult to read. The handwriting can be difficult and daunting to read at times. There are occasional cross-outs in his reworking of a poem. I would recommend this book highly for someone who is studying George Herbert and wants to see how the master poet wrote this text himself. I am very grateful to a visiting Bishop who recommended this book and the John Drury book as great informative tools.
