“His Uncle’s Favorite”: A Pride and Prejudice tale that takes a divergent path after the Netherfield ball and its residents’ hasty departure.

Shortly after Christmas, their Aunt Gardiner persuades Jane and Elizabeth Bennet to spend time with her in London. There, the girls encounter familiar faces and intriguing new acquaintances. As fate would have it, their aunt’s Gracechurch Street home is frequented by intimate members of Mr. Darcy’s family, and Elizabeth discovers that she and Darcy’s uncle have more than one favorite in common.

This is a tale of wrong first impressions, mistaken pride and prejudice, rights and wrongs — a divergent but familiar story of the struggle for happiness of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Not what I expected from this author
By M. Briggs
I've read other books from Lory Lilian and have enjoyed them in the past. This one, in my opinion, doesn't live up to her past books. The story had interesting twists but was not interesting enough for it's lenght. I was frustrated by the juvenile dialogue throughout the book. On a plus side, I always enjoy seeing direct quotes from Jane Austen and some were placed in interesting places to accommodate the altered storyline. However, I don't like modern and Austen mixes like "twenty-four families" and the reference to Miss Bennet. In the era, Miss Bennet referred to the oldest daughter when both were present. Always. Elizabeth would not be confused with this reference and I was confused by her questioning "Which one?" when Jane and Elizabeth were in the same room. This story spends a lot of time in Cheapside. That's fine, but I can't accept that Mrs. Gardener receives almost daily visits from an earl, his son, his daughter and the Darcy family members. I also really don't like books that erase the time requirements of travel and dress of that era. Running to and from between Grosvenor Square and Cheapside in a horse and carriage takes time and was not often completed multiple times in one day. Some variation books seem to smoothly blend modern and Austen era dialogue, customs, travel and experiences. I can't say that this was one of them. Overall, there just isn't enough to recommend it and many reasons to avoid it.

Sweet, Surprising, and Character-Driven Romance
By Gioia
I love stories in which Elizabeth or the Bennets turn out to be wealthy, titled or have better social connections than in Pride and Prejudice, because of the way that it turns Darcy's expectations and attitudes upside down. I enjoyed the way Lory took a unique spin on this, by having the important social standing come through her supposedly inferior connections on Gracechurch Street. That really serves to throw poor Darcy for a loop!

There is much about this story that I thought I understood prior to reading it in its entirety. Lory had previously posted a short story by the same name which later inspired her to write this novel-length tale. Based on the short story, I was certain I knew what to expect in this novel-length tale. I was wrong. Lory is a talented writer who knows how to create a fantastic, riveting story which isn't in the least predictable. Even the title itself is far more of a mystery than I realized. Who is the uncle's favorite? It wasn't who I initially expected!

In "His Uncle's Favorite," Elizabeth and Darcy both have their Hunsford epiphany, but it doesn't occur at the same time, place or manner in which it does in Jane Austen's book. The protagonists have a similar road they travel, learning about each other and themselves, but it's a very different road from that which we already know. Don't expect this to be a rehash of canon or even of other Jane Austen-inspired books. The story is primarily based in London and is populated by a large cast of original characters (OCs) who are extremely well developed. Those OCs have such a huge impact on the plot, that it helps to prevent this original, unique story from having a "been there, done that" air. I loved it.

90% great book and well worth the money
By TLeighF
I truly enjoyed this book and found it very satisfying. I would give it 4.5 stars if that was possible. The story is interesting, the characters are fun, and the writing is pretty good (there are some typos, etc., but fewer than many other variations I have read, and not enough to detract from the story). I actually read it through twice back to back, I liked it so much. My only complaint is that the in last 10% of the book, right after they get married (sorry for the spoiler), it turns into a very graphic sexual romance novel. All of a sudden, Darcy and Elizabeth are going at it like rabbits all over the place. I thought it was unnecessary and not at all in keeping with the rest of the book. I personally don't like that kind of graphic detail, but I know some people do. If you are like me and don't like it, then still read the book but skim through the last 10% to just get the plot twists there. The book is long enough that you will still get your money's worth, even if you don't read the ending.
