Interesting and Fun read

I've halfway through the 3rd book and can tell you the first one may be the best. It is the most interesting new system of magic to come in awhile, where you gain power by having others dedicate their attributes, such as strength, speed, memory,etc. to you. But once they dedicate an attribute to you they lose it and are dependent on you for protection.

This introduces a moral dilemma for many good leaders - they don't want to take these attributes from people without making sure they truly want to help. Bad guys will extort others into it. Then of course, people become so powerful it's easier to kill those who dedicated their strength than to kill those who received strength. Which again introduces moral dilemmas for the good guys.

Unfortuneately the series gets rather preachy after the first book. With "pragmatists" being derided throughout the first book, "cynics" derided throughout the second. In the second book especially this gets rather old very fast, and I found myself skimming through sections featuring the protagonist and reading intently the other characters' adventures!

I think the main weakness also is that the protagonist is simply not as endearing as the other characters. While the author continually tries to convince you that the protagonist is "right" (most of the time) and the others who think he is too idealistic are "wrong", you end up agreeing with the other characters. Though I suppose readers who are pacifists who truly believe violence is never the answer may like it.

One of the main enemies, the Reavers, are also a very interesting creation. In the 3rd book we start to learn more about them.

Despite its flaws it is still interesting and a fun read, and I recommend it.

Something new in Fantasyland!

The world of fantasy novels are often nothing more than sad rehashes of The Hobbit, or worse, longhand versions of some late night jam session with some D&D buddies. But Runelords gifts us with something NEW! No small miracle considering that most book shelves are crammed with prancing elves and dour dwarves. Thankfully, none will be found here. Instead of staid old dragons (yawn) we have reavers. The Marines from the Alien movies would probably prefer thier old nemisis over these guys. And the main human opponent, while certainly evil, pursues his dark path in the name of saving humanity instead of the old -I serve a dark god, so go pike yourself- type we usualy get. I believe the saying "Extremeism in the service of mankind is no vice" could be his moto, and it makes for a very interesting bad guy. Perhaps best of all is the singular magic system. It allows for some very interesting statagey and fighting. Even more importantly, it sets up some social questions. How much should a person give in defence of his country? How much should a leader ask from his people?... the effects that rune magic has on this 'typical' midevil culture is profound and far reaching. If you have a soft spot for fantasy but think that you'll be force to murder someone if you have to read about one more magical elf forest city, PLEASE TRY THIS! If the average fantasy is dominos pizza, this is a good curry... different and challenging.

New magic, Interesting Plot - but some stupidity

For starters I'd like to say that this book offers a refreshing take on the fantasy genre.
Forget about Dungeons and Dragons type spells, here magic is summed up as more of a commodity. There a certain traits or attributes that people can bestow upon another (but at great cost as those who bestow such powers loose their own abilities) so instead of casting spells and such, people gift to others their powers of wit, stamina, brawn, sights, hearing, smell, etc... The people who receive these gifts, they become superhuman. Those who gift others become deaf, blind, or even vegetables at worst. This magical aspect of the world I really liked.
Also, as far as this being a gripping book, I'd say it is. Save the first 50 or so pages, once I got sucked into the plot I found myself too curious to see what was going to happen next to put the book down. Character development is adequate, the main characters are interesting, and the antagonist is pretty fascinating too.
There are however a couple big negatives:
I know its fantasy, but some of the laws of the land in this book are so unrealistic and naïve it's turned me off. I'm not giving anything major away here, but to say that executing or even imprisoning an assassin is against the law, and not challenging this concept, well that's just foolish.
Also, the love story began in such a way it makes you think the protagonist is a fool. Which after he falls in love you see he's not. So the start of the love plotline is disappointing to say the least.
The above two statement made me loose a lot of credibility in this world. But save those two major errors it was a very enjoyable read. Despite my objections I'd still recommend this as a refreshing novel for the fantasy genre.

"The Mission Classified".....Book 2

"Above Reproach" is a very good sequel to "Beyond Instinct". In this book Lynn Ames has brought the well known characters of Kate & Jay, Peter & Lorraine, Justine, Sebastien, Vaughn and a new and psychically gifted Sedona as a love interest for Vaughn. Lynn has united this group into one cohesive unit in a very suspenseful and action packed story! Due to a different and somewhat surprising ending, another book needs to follow soon to, hopefully, settle the issue(s) for us fans out here in book and Kindle land.

Kudos to Lynn Ames for another solid series: "The Mission Classified". Keep 'em coming!!

a definate..

I actually read this this book before the first book of the series...this book i thought was very well written and kept me interested...the characters blended well...and i didnt have to read the first book in the series to know who people were...i am now reading the first book and now i know what the back stories of each main character is...i don't like to give story lines away so that is why i don't mention any specific character... the only reason i did not give 5 stars is because i believe the books are too short...they could be longer...i really hope the future books could be longer..great book!

It just doesn't click

Above Reproach is book two in the Mission Classified series by Lynn Ames. It's another action/suspense story that reintroduces the reader to Vaughn Elliott, one of the major characters in the first book Beyond Instinct.

For people who have read many of Lynn Ames' books, this one is difficult to evaluate. It's certainly far better than her first books, but it doesn't show the promise or ability of her recent work, especially Beyond Instinct. The dialogue isn't very good between the characters and there's never really a feeling of suspense in the story. The "bad guys" are supposed to be super-secret plotters who have tremendous resources available to them, but they are extremely inept at stopping the agents from achieving their goal. Vaughn and her group have little real trouble confusing and evading their opponents and getting into Iraq. The way they deal with the facility is probably meant to show their level of training, but it doesn't create the suspense that a reader would expect. The rate that a relationship develops between Sedona and Vaughn doesn't match with the feelings they each express about past relationships, so their situation doesn't feel "real." The story might have been stronger if the relationship had been left out. Finally, there is a supernatural aspect to the story that, for those who don't believe in that type of thing, can be very trying and contributes to the disjointed feeling of the book.

Above Reproach is not a poorly written book. For someone who is looking for a quick read that is fairly entertaining, it will do fine. For anyone who has read Ames' recent books, it doesn't quite come up to the ability she has shown recently; therefore, the book may be somewhat disappointing. For fans of suspense novels, this one is tepid and there are others that demonstrate the genre better. Those who are Ames fans and follow her work will read and enjoy this. Those who are genre fans may want to find something else.

Very in-depth exploration of the Gospel of Peter

In The Cross That Spoke, author John Crossan argues for an interdependent relationship between what he calls the Cross Gospel, the intracanonical gospels, and the extant fragments known as The Gospel of Peter. His assertion is based on a multi-faceted argument: that there was an original form of the Cross Gospel, that material was added to bring it in line with developing church doctrine, and that, eventually, portions of the original text were redacted to create a seamless final product. Crossan briefly describes the two relevant archaeological discoveries that yielded fragments of The Gospel of Peter and summarizes the development of scholarly opinion regarding their dependence, or lack thereof, upon the intracanonical gospels. With this background established, the majority of the book is devoted to proving his core assertions through careful textual analysis of innumerable biblical, apocryphal, and secular sources. Three final chapters discuss the theological ramifications of accepting the Cross Gospel as an original source for the existing Passion and Resurrection narratives.

About the Author
E.D. Hirsch, Jr. is the Linden Kent Memorial Professor of English at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and the author of Cultural Literacy, The First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, and The Core Knowledge Series. Dr. Hirsch is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a senior fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is president of the Core Knowledge Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to educational reform.

Barrett Whitener has been narrating audiobooks since 1992. His recordings have won several awards, including the prestigious Audie and seven Earphones Awards. AudioFile magazine has named him one of the Best Voices of the Century. He lives in Washington, DC.

Another threat to America -- the cultural illiterate

Hasn't the popularity of "Dummies" books raised a red flag anywhere? What does that say about the average American reader's view of him/herself? Do we sense that we're educationally lacking?
Too many of America's young people do not have, because they haven't been taught, the knowledge they need to preserve the exceptional way of life they've inherited. They know Harry Potter and West Wing but not the Peloponnesian Wars or who said, "To be or not to be." They are culturally illiterate.
Cultural literacy is the background information we need to know in order to understand and to communicate in our society. Without it we wouldn't understand what a reviewer says when he likens Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" to "Cinderella" or when a pundit says the environment is a politician's Achilles heel.
"To be culturally literate," Hirsch says, "is to possess the basic information needed to thrive in the modern world." Readers must understand the writer's unspoken "systems of associations."
I've taught college-level writing classes and have been astounded to meet students who have never read a book, who don't understand the simplest references to classical literature and who, frankly, don't care.
This ignorance threatens our very existence as a free nation. One of the most important points Hirsch makes is the need for the average citizen to understand enough science to comprehend debates about environmental and political issues. He cites the debate over the Strategic Defense Initiative and says of the voting public, "...their education should have provided them with the general facts and principles needed to understand the terms of the debate -- how a satellite works, what a laser is and can do, and under what conditions such a system would be likely to succeed or fail." He neglects to mention the historical, social and political backgrounds that enter into the debate but his point applies to those as well.
The highest stakes are involved here. The last election was a primary example of the ignorance of the American voter. Many still don't understand what happened and are merrily led down a primrose path of misunderstanding by an equally Constitutionally (as in the US Constitution)uninformed press. Further, and even sadder, they don't bother to find out!
Read CULTURAL LITERACY. Absorb it. Make it your mantra and work to see that the next generation of Americans learns the background of their culture as well as the history, sociology and science they need to protect our way of life at the ballot box.

an interesting worthwhile read

Interesting insights into how people learn to read. Hirsch makes the case that reading is not just skill but requires some content to provide context and make reading more efficient (and enjoyable). Also intriquing is the idea of defining the reading context in terms of a national literacy. (A good way to appreciate these issues is to try to learn a foreign language enough to understand the media of a foreign country.)
The controversial stuff comes from the rejection of the Rousseau/Dewey teaching doctrine, and the proposal for a national standard for teaching content knowledge in primary and secondary school. Hirsch claims that it is teaching doctine, rather than parenting, that is behind the lack of literacy in American children. This was not so convincing as he cites data that indicate that children who spent more time studying do better at reading. It is clear that Hirsch is embroiled in quite an educator doctrine controversy.
In any case, the list at the end of the book was a hoot, and I was pleased to find that I knew what most things were and had at least heard of everything else. It would have been nice if the list could have come with reference information but then the book would have been several times larger (maybe someone should come up with a web site devoted to the list). Running down items in the list has been a lot of fun and I still look at the list from time to time when I feel the need to expand my cultural literacy.

Not what I expected but OK

First off I think some reviewers are giving people the wrong idea of what this book has to offer. I think they meant to review the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy and not this book. After reading some of their reviews I purchased this book and it is not exactly what they led me to believe it was.

This book is made up of essentially two parts. The first part Hirsch put forth his theory that Americans are losing their ability to communicate effectively because they are lacking a common knowledge on certain core items. He sites back when people had a more standard education and were forced to read more because of a lack of television they were more commonly grounded in the same types of information.

To explain this theory simply he illustrates giving directions in a city when people assume you are a native to that city. The directions are simple because it is assumed one is familiar with certain landmarks (core knowledge). When giving directions to someone the believe to be a tourist, the directions get a lot more detailed because these people presumably lack the same knowledge of landmarks (core knowledge).

It is a very interesting theory and he backs it up with a lot of research. This book would be of great interest to anyone that is an educator by profession. It might be a little boring to anyone else. Some people have commented that this is a very conservative or right-leaning book. I really don't see that at all. He looks at this theory from the perspective of other cultures as well and the theory holds up. He does say that things people need to know to be culturally literate are often based on Western culture. This is true for the most part. He should not be vilified for pointing out the obvious. He doesn't say that one society is better than another. He just acknowledges that people of different cultures tend to have knowledge of certain things and that it is helpful to be familiar with those items.

The second part is an extensive list of cultural knowledge that experts have agreed on 90% of the time to be relevant. This is only a list. In no way does it define them or elaborate on them. That is what is supposedly spelled out in the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, the book I thought I was getting.

EVELYN TRIBOLE, M.S., R.D., is an award-winning registered dietitian with a nutrition counseling practice in Newport Beach, California. She was the nutrition expert for "Good Morning America" and was a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association for six years. ELYSE RESCH, M.S., R.D., F.A.D.A., has been in private practice in Beverly Hills, California, as a nutrition therapist for thirty years, specializing in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, and preventative nutrition.

A Common Sense Approach for Everyone!

Intuitive Eating encompasses ten principles, but the main three (3) keys are these:

* Unconditional permission to eat when hungry and what food is desired
* Eating for physical rather than emotional reasons
* Reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues to determine when and how much to eat

I have been a big fan & promoter of this method since I first heard about it in 2005. Using its principles, I lost twenty-five pounds in six months while eating my favorite things (chocolate, ice cream, cheeseburgers, pizza, etc).

In this latest edition of the book, the authors have removed many of the numbers that were in the previous edition (stats, weights, heights) because they believe that it leads to self-sabotage when these are the focus. They have also added two new chapters -- one that gives scientific backing to prove that IE works, and the other that focuses on how to help children and teens become Intuitive Eaters.

The chapter on kids was actually very interesting to me, as I have two of my own (ages 11 & 14), one of which is very rebellious in regards to food -- he loves chips & ice cream, and it worries me that he's learning all of my own bad habits. The authors insist, though, that letting kids make their own decisions regarding food (how much, what kinds, etc) is the best method because they will intuitively get in the balanced nutrition they need, if they're left alone. It's when an issue is made of their eating habits or their weight that they start to rebel, and/or lose faith in their ability to trust their internal cues.

One thing that surprised me about this new edition was the constant reminder of how it's important to put weight loss on the back burner in the beginning of this process. The reason for this is that, if you're focused on losing weight -- as opposed to just learning how to become an Intuitive Eater -- you will sabotage yourself by either getting depressed over the slowness of your weight loss progress, or by seeking out other diets in hopes of quicker results.

Here are some quotes from the book that I found helpful (some of which I forgot to write the page number references for):

* bring peace to your eating life and body image (p.32)
* focus on weight loss MUST be put on the back burner while you learn to return to Intuitive Eating
* If you allow even one small hope to linger that a new and better diet might be lurking around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover Intuitive Eating (chp.1)
* undereating leads to overeating
* you can't fail at IE -- it's a learning process at every point along the way (p.53)
* the more you practice, the more confidence you'll have (p.86)
* focus on continual change and learning, and start thinking in terms of what you can learn along the way (p.119)
* pause in the middle of eating to gauge your hunger level, and to ask yourself how the food tastes
* give yourself permission to eat again when you get hungry
* if you start eating when you're not hungry, it's hard to know when to stop from satiety (p.128)
* slow down while eating
* It's what you eat consistently, over time, that matters -- progress, not perfection...
* Intuitive Eating means having no guilt in your eating (p.301)

Lastly, there is a chapter on eating disorders, too, and how those caught in the throes of one can seek help, and also learn to eat intuitively.

Overall, I most highly recommend this book, and this method. It is very much based on common sense, and we all know that dieting doesn't work in the long run, anyway. This method is great because you can still eat what you love, you can eat out at restaurants without worrying about blowing your `diet', and you can lose the craziness of obsessing over what food is "good/bad".

Reinventing my relationship with food and loving it

It must have been fate or divine intervention, but this book came at the perfect time for me. I had pre-ordered the 3rd edition of the book months before (waiting on the new chapter on teaching children intuitive eating), forgot I had ordered it, and in the mean time went on my usual roller coaster of dieting then overeating and gained and lost the same 5-10 lbs. I had just started a protein only diet to lose those 10 lbs again and was MISERABLE when this book arrived in the mail. I stopped my diet immediately and devoured the book in a couple days. After only a week with this book, I can already tell it will be a lifesaver for me.

It made me realize the reasons why I am overeating, which has helped me stop the cycle more than any diet rule ever has. I also am learning to enjoy my food and really savor it, leading me to eat less. I have also started exercising again, but more gentle and enjoyable exercise than when I was dieting. My biggest accomplishment so far was when I made a batch of real chocolate chip cookies, savored ONE, and felt truly satisfied. Before I would have either eaten the entire batch in a day or would not have made them at all and use substitutes that never really met the craving (leading me to over eat the cookies whenever I got my hands on them). I am still early in the process, but I can already see that this will be a healthy, balanced and enjoyable way to eat for the rest of my life.

I am starting to incorporate the chapter on intuitive eating for children (I have two preschoolers). It is scary letting my kids have what they want, I have been controlling their food intake and limiting sweets since they were born. I think this process will be harder than the work on myself. But I know it will be worth it in the end.

Good Read for people with eating disorders

I have Chronic Binge Eating Disorder CBE

this book makes sense . I've been through every diet, lost thousands of pounds, gained them all back. I even had the Gastric Sleeve surgery. I lost 150lbs...but alas my CBE and my weakness has caused me to gain back most of it.....

Not sure I can do it but this is definitely the way to eat...

One of the Best Erotic Shorts I've Ever Read

This story is polished, fun, and extremely sexy. Very high level of writing and character development. I wasn't the perfect size four myself in college, so I know what this main character is going through. Aiden certainly would have been my dream come true. The way the sexual tension and intimacy builds between these two is exciting and paced just right. It's a story that addresses how hard it can be to be a larger woman without turning it into an uncomfortable litany of humiliating experiences. Cecelia is vulnerable without being whipped, sassy in a really cute way. It's delightfully believable that Aiden would fall for her. I didn't anticpate her mother's reaction, but that was another really nice aspect of the story. Highly *highly* recommended.

I know why this book is selling so well!

Christa Wick has found a niche in erotica that she excels in. Riding Curves is a good example of a book that hooks your attention at the title. The word "riding" could be viewed as a double entendre, with some authors maybe wanting to take the path of the less tasteful option of "riding." Christa instead presents a rakishly handsome and seductive male protagonist in the form of the delicious Aiden who "rides" a motorcycle. Christa's female lead, CeCe is typical of what she calls a "BBW." CeCe is like many of us that are carrying that little bit of extra weight that makes us dread swimsuit season, but that's about it. Christa serves as the voice of millions of women (and men probably for that matter) that wish they were more of a skinny-mini, but still have the chops in other ways to attract the Aiden's of the world. She presents her erotic romance story, at least in this case, in a skillfully developed tale with excellent descriptive narrative and character development that is so good that it leaves little room for improvement.

Christa's work is long enough to make it a great value for an ebook, and the characterization and setting is set and described sufficiently that she will have you breathless with anticipation by the time the clothes start flying. A great read, I highly recommend it, and know that I will be downnloading more of Christa's tales of her tantalizing curvy females, and the hunky guys that they crush on.

Christa Wick... BBW's romantic hero!

This book is a quick sizzling little read, that leaves you hot around the collar.

We've got a heroine Ce Ce that has crushed on her hero Aiden from the time she hit puberty, she has fantasized and longed for him for as long as she can remember. It's left her High School and College social life stunted, as no Boy can compare to what Aiden epitomises, yet she knows that he thinks of her as a little sister.

Aiden is at least a decade older than Ce Ce (who's 20, I believe) he's fiercly loyal to Ce Ce's Father who took him under his wing as a teenager and had since gone into business with him, he's never wanted to cross a line that would cost him everything he holds close.

It takes a stalled car, a questionable text message, and a motorcyle ride to get Aiden to see the light, Ce Ce's all grown up and wants him as much as he wants her, but is she mature enough to handle what he wants to offer her?

The plot is a simple one, and it's not a deep book... but it's sexy, and hot and if you need a little sizzle in your kindle, then I advise you that this is the book for you.

A Smash Hit with Both my children!!

My 5 year old daughter received this book as a gift from her uncle and it instantly became one of her favorites. She and her brother love the story and the colorful illustrations are a real hit. The only problem is who gets to keep the one copy we have in their bed that night (we currently alternate nights ;-) Let's hope this becomes a long running series!!

My two-and-a-half year old daughter loves this book. She makes my wife and I read it to her all the time. What kid doesn't appreciate a little fart humor. She also thinks that the strangely colored fruit is hilarious.

Disgusting

This is the most offensive, disgusting book I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. The fact that it is a children's book is very disturbing. It makes fun of overweight people and uses inappropriate language for kids. I am sickened by this book. Whoever published it should be ashamed of themselves.

Martha Ruskai's thirty year career as a freelance wig and makeup artist and designer includes opera, film, print, TV, and dance. When not in the theatre, she can be found at dog shows, agility, and water trials with her Portuguese Water Dogs.

Allison Lowery is the Wig and Makeup Specialist for Texas Performing Arts at the University of Texas -- Austin and the author of the Historical Wig Styling books. She has previously worked at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Glimmerglass Opera, among many others. Great textbook for wigmaking!

For anyone truly interested in actually making/building/repairing lace wigs, this book is a treasure! I was actually a little surprised that it goes into such detailed depth with regards to not only wigmaking, but all the other kinds of hairpieces and how they are made and when to use them(when working in theater or tv). The pictures are all clear, and well lit. There's even a few very short companion videos on an accompanying website showing knotting and sewing techniques....

The only thing i think would make this book better is an accompanying dvd to show more techniques in real time, and more websites/sources to actually buy tools and lace and hair from. The author makes references to one website in particular, which i visited, and there's very little actually on the website, sent them an email, to which i never received a reply. It can be hard to find all the tools/materials you need for wigmaking in one spot, so i've had to piece my kit together from several different places, including ebay. You've gotta shop around though, cuz several people sell the exact same things, some very reasonably, and some mark prices up dramatically to make a larger profit...
So in a nutshell, i would definitely recommend this book. It's like the "textbook" of wigmaking. The book, combined with the author's short vids, and user uploaded vids on youtube are all you need to learn to make/build/repair/knot lace wigs.

Amazing book! It has all about the different types of laces and hair and needles. It shows you how to take measurements when making custom wigs. It teaches you ventilating and wefting. Great facial hair chapter and styling chapter. Full of beautiful pictures! There's also a really cool section on building wigs with cage bases and finding jobs.

Absolutely fascinating and lovely.

Absolutely fascinating -- the walk through of how to make wigs also indirectly explains why they are so ridiculously expensive to buy pre-made.. This book is very straightforward and methodical, and includes a lot of pictures to help visualize the techniques it explains. I would give it six stars if I could.
