Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world. Since the 1990's concrete technology has been developing rapidly. In response to the urgent need for a book that introduces updated methodology, knowledge and understanding of new developments in concrete technology, Wiley has published Zongjin Li's "Advanced Concrete Technology." In addition to discussion of basic aspects of concrete, this book provides very comprehensive information about concrete technology. A systematic introduction of new developments includes advanced cement-based composites, self compacting concrete, ultra high strength/performance concrete, and extruded building products. An excellent discussion on concrete fracture mechanics and non-destructive evaluation is given in two separate chapters. There is also has a chapter on future developments and trends including aspects of sustainability and service life design.

The book benefits from the author's research expertise as well as extensive involvement in teaching at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. For example, the overview of non-destructive testing (NDT) for concrete engineering is systematic and comprehensive. A complete and clear discussion of newly developed NDT methods includes non-contact resistivity measurement, shear wave reflection, longitudinal wave transmission, and embedded cement-based piezoelectric transducer based ultrasonic measurements. The title is honest, this is a comprehensive exposition of the engineering study of concrete and concrete products and processes.
The author is Chinese and certain detectible Chinese features creep into the text after the first 10 or so pages, which evidently received a more careful editorial review. Nevertheless the book is generally easy to read and understand, and skipping to particular
sections of interest later in the book can be done easily and with comprehension. I would recommend purchase for anyone involved
in any phase of concrete production.

Professor Sanders' book is a pioneering effort to integrate Big Data Analytics into the most important business function in today's global economy: supply chain management (SCM). I would say there are two main contributions of this book: (1) foundational conceptual architecture in a new field, and (2) examples of best practices from industry pioneers in the use of Big Data. The fifth star is to applaud Sanders' clear writing style that makes a potentially difficult and technical subject easy to digest and entertaining to read.

(1) This book provides a practical, easy-to-apply Road Map that organizes big data applications around each of the supply chain levers. In short, this enables businesses to optimize supply chains, which decreases risks and costs, while improving strategic positioning and profit margins. It would appear that businesses are missing huge opportunities if they don't integrate Big Data into supply chain management. Unfortunately, most of what has been written about Big Data is focused on the retail, marketing, and software side, and ignores the major practical issue of how to exploit the vast amount of information generated by all of the relevant parties in a supply chain. Sanders is breaking new ground here, as it seems that this is the first book to integrate Big Data into supply chain management.

(2) One of the things I appreciate about an author is when they back up normative claims, like "you should do this, but not that," with concrete illustrations that prove the prudence of the advice. This book contains a wealth of examples, illustrations, and insights from industry pioneers in Big Data applications, all organized around the conceptual framework introduced by Sanders. This short story collection, teeming with life in the small Indian city of Kittur between the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and that of her son Rajiv in 1991, serves as a prelude to Adiga's Booker Prize–winning The White Tiger. Loosely based on a tourist itinerary, the stories meander through the lives of a motley array of hoykas and Brahmins, Muslims and Christians. We meet Xerox, the peddler of illegally copied books who doesn't mind having been arrested 21 times, as this seems a step up from his father's work as an excrement shoveler. Then there is Jayamma: the eighth of nine daughters, she is sent out to work because her father had only enough money to marry off six daughters. Her only comfort is getting high on DDT fumes and rubbing the buttocks of a tiny idol of baby Krishna. Adiga's India is a place of wildly disparate fortunes, where a 500-rupee meal at the Oberoi Hotel in Bombay scandalizes a construction worker who marvels at the sight of a 20-rupee note. It's a gruesome picture of existence, and the small epiphanies hit like bricks from heaven. (June)

Inspired by Balzac's La Comedie Humaine, Adiga intended to write a portrait of Indian life; as such, place and theme, rather than characters, tie together these 14 stories. Each starts with a travel vignette -- a daylong walk around a different section of Kittur -- that introduces the town. But, as he did in The White Tiger, Adiga soon delves deeper to focus on class and caste inequalities and characters "paralyzed by their powerlessness" (Newsweek). His meticulous descriptions of men, women, and children from all walks of life offer insight into modern India, one where few such as these experience redemption. Some reviewers commented on the unevenness of the stories and the lack of overall plot, but all agreed on Adiga's important role as "a sensitive chronicler of modern India" (Telegraph).

Aravind Adiga is one of India's most refreshing contributions to the world of books in recent years. His first novel, a wildly original story of near-mythic proportions, "The White Tiger," won the UK's prestigious Man Booker Prize.

"Between the Assassinations" is a latticework of fourteen interrelated stories about the people of Kittur, a small town "on India's southwestern coast, between Goa and Calicut." The organizing principle of this book is the tourist guide, as each story begins with a walk through one of Kittur's distinctive neighborhoods, giving the reader a view of the town's humanity in all its extraordinary diversity. The stories in this collection are set in the tumultuous time in Indian history between the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 and that of her son, Rajiv, seven years later.

A casual visitor to India inevitably remarks on the abject poverty to be found among so many of that country's people. What remains invisible to the tourist comes to life in this remarkable collection of stories: the hopes, fears, doubts, and convictions of India's poor, and the survival strategies they forge in the midst of challenges the rest of us cannot conceive. This series of short stories gives a gripping and unique look into life in modern India. The characters come at us from all parts of the society, and each one has an incredible story. Although these are short stories, they tie together smoothly and complete each other in their own way. Anyone who enjoys reading about India should not miss this book.

A fascinating journey through history, from the Exodus of the Jews to the present.
The book deals with one of the most curious and intriguing endeavor of the organized human society : espionage.
The ten chapters detail the history, development and execution of the most interesting and daring spy stories and espionage enterprises.
One of the most valuable contributions of the book, well beyond it's most entertaining narrative, is the author's explanation of the different types of espionage, the theories behind them and the reasons of success or failure of the actions.
It is very well written, and based on astonishingly extensive and broad historical reasearch.

A lot of information in a small space. I found the book best read in small portions.. Each chapter could be a volume by itself. Most of the stories were totally new to me. The book covers two areas that I am quite passionate about and read avidly, history and spy stories. Great book, I enjoyed it.

Very powerful book

I just finished reading this book and while it does talk about country living, there is just so much more to this book then just that. It explains about what we need to be doing to get this message out and how we are to be prepared for those coming into the message. Hint....We all need to have a city of refuge. WAnt to know what that means? Read the book! Very powerful and very thought provoking.

This is a keeper and one to make you think!

We all think of Noah and his ark from time to time perhaps. These ideas in Another Ark to Build, helps you to visualize and see those things in life that are important and meaningful. This is a book to keep and reread. It is not new, but it is, for each day and each year we live we are planning and preparing for the future in one way of another. Great for young and old to get them ready to perahps build their own ARK.

Hit the Nail, on the head....

My name is Rick Phelps. I have EOAD. Was diagnosed early last year. I can no longer read. I can, but cannot understand what I have read after three paragraphs or so. My wife reads important things to me. We are lucky enough to know Gary. And his book is nothing short of great. He covers so many topics. It's not only a great read, but its an excellant reference book, to go back to over and over again.

Gary and I met through a FB site, Memory People. Which I started last November. I have said many times every once in a while someone will come along who will change the way we look at this horrible disease we call Alzheimer's...Gary is one of those people. We are better just by knowing him. His book is a must read.

Common Sense Support for Dementia Caregivers

Gary Le Blanc knows what he's talking about. He lived it. Caring for his Dad for ten years, making that loving commitment to see things through, come what may.

As a caregiver of a loved one with dementia, you are thrown into a raging sea of chaos and information, and expected to sink or swim. You are usually exhausted, adrift and feeling very isolated. Suddenly you are caring for one whose every minute must be monitored, or they might wander off. You must learn to slow down, take each moment as it comes, and be ready for rough waters. And yet you must project a positive attitude, because people with dementia are very sensitive.

Staying Afloat In A Sea of Forgetfulness is full of common sense that only a caregiver could write. Every dementia patient is different, but there are common experiences that make the caregiver feel calmer. If you read nothing else, read this. The book is designed as a series of articles. I refer to it often.
