Principles & Practice of Physics Volume 1 (Chs. 1-21), by Eric Mazur

Putting physics first: Based on his storied research and teaching, Eric Mazur’s Principles & Practice of Physics Volume 1 (chapters 1-21)1/e builds an understanding of physics that is both thorough and accessible. Unique organization and pedagogy allow you to develop a true conceptual understanding of physics alongside the quantitative skills needed in the course.

  • New learning architecture: The book is structured to help you learn physics in an organized way that encourages comprehension and reduces distraction.
  • Physics on a contemporary foundation: Traditional texts delay the introduction of ideas that we now see as unifying and foundational. This text builds physics on those unifying foundations, helping you to develop an understanding that is stronger, deeper, and fundamentally simpler.
  • Research-based instruction: This text uses a range of research-based instructional techniques to teach physics in the most effective manner possible. The result is a groundbreaking book that puts physics first, thereby making it more accessible to you to learn. MasteringPhysics® works with the text to create a learning program that enables you to learn both in and out of the classroom.

Key Topics: Foundations, Motion in One Dimension, Acceleration, Momentum, Energy, Principle of Relativity, Interactions
Force, Work, Motion in a Plane, Motion in a Circle, Torque, Gravity, Special Relativity, Periodic Motion, Waves in One Dimension, Waves in Two and Three Dimensions, Fluids, Entropy, Energy Transferred Thermally, Degradation of Energy

This textbook drops the ball
By Amazon Customer
I am taking Physics at college for my degree. This is the worst textbook I have ever used, and I am not alone in this sentiment. Even my physics professor mentioned that they were going to avoid this textbook in future years. Unfortunately, I will still need to use this book for the last half of physics next semester, but I am warning you now, avoid at all costs. The book is doubly split, first by quantitative tools and concept separately in the chapter. Then, the problems are in an entirely different book. Sure, the idea might seem to have potential at first, but after a few chapters, I realized how much of a disaster the implementation is. This is also minimally calculus based, which is kind of disappointing. There are some random derivatives and integrals here and there, but it is never really needed which is quite disappointing. Because the book likes to present everything in algebra form, the labeling of variables is a nightmare. I'm certain I have seen some equations in here with 3 or 4 different subset variables within another variable. It's just terrible. The physics itself in the book is fine and quite interesting (the style in which the concepts is presented are easy enough to follow), and I am impressed with all of Mazur's accomplishments as a physicist, but he needs to fire his editor and publisher for allowing his name to be attached to this butchered textbook. The layout alone is the only reason this is one star. It minimizes learning, efficiency, and defeats the purpose of what I think a textbook should be. (An example of a good textbook is Tro Chemistry: A Molecular Approach 3rd Edition.)

Look for another book
By Brendan
As a student, I find this book is decently written and okay for review, but it has terrible structure and uses cliché examples lacking insight. It tends to be a chore to read because of this. The structure of the book forces the student to, in a way, discover the physics on their own. While this sounds good, I found it not to be. If the reader's conclusions are wrong, it makes it terribly difficult to learn because most of the content of the book is crammed into the answers of "check points" that appear after every subsection. Moreover, having entirely separate concept and math sections for each chapter increased the difficulty of the subject matter. The argument this book takes for separating these things is that it allows the student to focus on the concepts without worrying about the math. I thought this sounded good at first, but realized it was not. I had to frequently turn to the math section, known by the chapter label as "quantitative tools," to try to understand the point the concept section was trying to make. Conversely, I had to frequently flip back to the concept section when reading the math section to understand what was going on. Not to mention that the math section tended to have sparsely organized derivations lacking any sort of color coding, boxes, or insightful diagrams that would make learning efficient.

If I put it briefly, it appears the train of thought in this book was scrambled after writing in an attempt to force the ideas into neat little sections... and these ideas lack insight.

The companion Practice book with the homework problems is more successful at explaining things by simply using the given example problems... yes, this book is actually two separate books, one for reading and the other for the homework problems... The homework problems themselves are typically ambiguous and far-removed from real-world examples, but I'll save the full review of that book for another day.

My suggestion to the author for future editions is to put all the related things reasonably near each other, and expand on them using real-world examples of physics being applied in industry or real-world phenomena. The author does some of this, but far too infrequently to make this a good book.

My suggestion to the student who is forced to buy this book, is to find another physics book here on Amazon with good reviews, order it used and get the solution manuals. When your instructor assigns you topics, use the table of contents and section headers of Mazur's book to match up to equivalent sections in this other book and learn that way. That's what I did.

I am just glad that amazon offers at least $40 for my $200 something book.

This has got to be one of the worst textbooks I have ever been required to use
By Dan Barnet
This has got to be one of the worst textbooks I have ever been required to use! My professor switched to this book after using the Knight physics book and it is a tremendous downgrade.

1) It is extremely unorganized and difficult to follow. Each chapter is broken into "Concepts" in the beginning and "Quantitative Tools" at the end. This method scatters the key learning objectives throughout each chapter. In order to relate the concepts to the mathematical steps of solving them, the reader must constantly skip back and forth between in-chapter sections to try and piece them together. Often times, key components such as units and definitions are skipped entirely until the end of the chapter glossary. I personally make chapter outlines for all my textbooks, and find myself extremely frustrated when I come to the last page and find key information that I needed to include four sections ago.

2) Contains a ridiculous amount of chapter checkpoints. What seems like every two paragraphs there is a barrage of stop and verify questions, many of which ask you to do child like experiments. Often times the questions being asked were hardly covered and the reader must flip to the back of the book answer index to find answers. Once again disorganized and time consuming. How hard is it to put the answers in the margins or below on the same page so we can check if correct without digging through the 300 pages.

3) Practice and homework problems are in a completely different book all together! Meaning if you want to actually look at an examples you have to open a completely new book.

Basically prepare to spend the majority of your time flipping back and forth between pages and books, to try and piece together the key concepts the author decided to split up and hide throughout . Terrible all around
