7 - A joy to turn the pages (pages lie down, so one's place is not lost)

Excellent Edition of the Summa.

I love the option of buying this set in individual volumes rather than all at once. The binding seems very sturdy and the writing and image on the front cover give it a nice look. The latin and english text is very readable!

The Nicot system is not the only non-grafting approach, but it works. This manuscript shares the journey of one beekeeper who taught himself how to raise his own queen honey bees. Grant F. C. Gillard, a small-scale commercial beekeeper since 1981, shares his insights and philosophies, his field-tested ideas and sustainable methods on how to hang tough, to persevere in the face of adversity, to run and not grow weary, to walk and not faint. Grant often tells people, “The Nicot kit is not the perfect method to raise queens; but neither is it the only way. It is what it is, but it becomes what we make it. It holds tremendous potential for the average beekeeper to take control of their genetics and shape, even reshape the destiny of their apiaries.” In essence, that is Grant’s purpose for raising his own queens, particularly in an era of “natural” beekeeping, managing our colonies with reduced and minimalistic treatments, and breeding our own locally-adapted queens from survivor stock. Grant wanted better queens than he was buying from the large, commercial queen producers in the south. He felt the Nicot system created the best opportunities, and lowered the bar for those beekeepers who didn’t know how to graft. Grant adds, “My journey raising my own queens covers a number of seasons, more than I can count at this point. I readily admit I’m not the sharpest crayon in the box but I’ve learned to keep on coloring, even if most of my work can’t stay within the lines.” There’s an old bit of advice that suggests real education is learning from our mistakes. Yet the best, most efficient education learns from the mistakes of others, and more so, it doesn’t take near as long and it’s generally not quite as expensive. Grant readily admits he's made many mistakes, especially in queen rearing. Grant hopes to accelerate your success so you don’t have to make the same mistakes he made and stumble over the same obstacles he incurred. Again, Grant adds, “I unswervingly believe the queen to be the heart and soul of the colony, and without a young, productive queen, everything, including a colony’s health and future, is at stake, as I mentioned in the preface.” When a honey bee colony struggles and wallows in malaise, for any reason, not just a poor queen, it is not uncommon to find beekeepers also experiencing frustration and losing heart. When beekeepers throw in the towel, especially on a larger scale, there is more at risk than the honey we enjoy in our green tea or the simmering anger of our spouse wondering why we entered such a challenging hobby at such a challenging juncture in time (translation: how come you haven’t harvested any honey in three years and why are we buying new bees to replace those old that died this past winter?) The absence of adequate pollinators affects everyone who irresponsibly grumbles with their mouths additionally one-third full of food humbly provided for them, courtesy of the tireless, under-appreciated honey bee. The benchmark of queen rearing is grafting, the mandatory technique that winnows out the potentials from the professionals. About the Author
Grant F. C. Gillard began keeping bees on the family farm in Glenville, Minnesota, after graduating from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, with a degree in Agriculture in 1981. While in his sophomore year, seeking the easiest class possible to elevate his battered grade-point average, Grant ignored his advisor’s derision and enrolled in a seemingly innocuous class entitled, “Entomology 222: Beekeeping,” taught by a retired high school biology teacher and adjunct professor, Richard Trump. Without grasping the potential blessings and lifelong implications this providential twist presented to his academic life, Grant was hopelessly inoculated with the desire to keep honey bees, which would later include visions of commercial aspirations. Grant was active during his high school years at the First Presbyterian Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he was baptized and ordained as a ruling elder. Returning to his home church after his college graduation, Grant’s church members, along with the Rev. Elmer Bates, convinced him he’d make a better pastor than a farmer. Their encouragement spun his life in yet another improbable direction. In 1987, Grant graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, with a Master’s of Divinity degree. It was there he met another Presbyterian student, Kansas City native, Nancy Farris. They married in 1986 during their senior year at Fuller. He later obtained a Doctor of Ministry degree from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2000. He’s only served two congregations thus far in his twenty-six years of ordained ministry. With his newlywed wife, the two served as co-associate pastors at the White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware. With a desire for more opportunities to preach and teach, Grant moved his young family to Jackson, Missouri in 1993 where he answered a call to serve as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church PC(USA). His active involvement over the past twenty years redefined his ministry as more of a community chaplain. Grant combines his passion for beekeeping with his pastoral duties at the church. Grant currently operates around 200 hives and produces honey for local retail sales and farmer’s markets in southeast Missouri. He also produces nucs, removes swarms and has published several other publications on the topics of beekeeping and personal growth.

Terrible writer. Boring text. Read something else.

Ugh. One of the worst written books I've ever come across. The book does not focus on the Nicot system, but is rather a rambling manifesto of one guy's opinions on queen rearing in general. Not interesting. There is also a fair amount of self-promotion of the writer's other publications. Nevertheless, I read the thing cover to cover and was able to glean two tips for using the box. I provide them here so you don't have to pay for this crap-book and then sit through the whole opinion piece on queens. If you know nothing about raising queens, read another book. If you know but want to try the Nicot box, read these two tips. Good luck out there!

1. Don't transplant eggs, which is well known in the queen rearing world, but in this system I could see someone rushing them into the cell-builder early.
2. Put the box in the hive and let the bees "polish" the cups for a couple of days. I'm not sure if this is good advice, but it is one of the only things in the book directly related to the Nicot box.

Like all of his books I have read

Like all of his books I have read, Gillard repeats himself and parts of it needs some editing BUT after wading through about one third it becomes clear why he repeats himself. It sears itself into your memory. It's also increasingly interesting and informative the further you get in. The tricks and tips provided from his experience of failure were incredibly valuable to me. Only missed 5 stars by a fraction.

Great content - poor format.

This book is an interesting read and contains some excellent nuggets of information. Unfortunately, the book uses a very large font (28 point?) that is very difficult for my young eyes to read. I can only read a few pages in a sitting before my eyes begin to complain.

Grade 9 Up - Rebellious in his East London home and deeply alienated from his alcoholic West Indian father, 15-year-old Ray pops off during class, gets expelled, and joins his best friends, outgoing Prem and contemplative Tyrone, who have also been "excluded" from school. All three are passionate hip-hop lovers who hang out in a small music shop run by a sympathetic Jamaican named Marga Man. After they are jailed following a fight, the headmaster decides to enroll them in an alternative program that allows them to pursue their rap interests. Marga Man uses his music contacts to get them started in a band - the Positive Negatives - and they soon become successful. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a rival band. Spurred on by a greedy promoter, the rappers engage in a deadly gang fight that both groups later regret. With the promoter in jail, they vow to work together to end the violence. Ray is an appealing and multidimensional character, but many of the others are little more than types. Mirroring the culture of "gangsta rap," some of the dialogue is misogynist (girls are referred to as "bitches"), stereotyped (Marga Man speaks a combination of mainstream and pidgin English), and raw. Then the boys' former headmaster enrolls the teens in a progressive school that combines traditional coursework with practical music experience. With the help of Manga Man, the boys dive into their work and form a band. A fairy tale of hip-hop success follows: a record deal and massive fame and wealth. A few characters lack dimension, and a subplot about a violent hip-hop rivalry doesn't entirely work. The boys' speech also occasionally echoes the harsh misogyny in some of the hip-hop they love: "I see some bitches that look like they want some training." An interesting look at the rap industry

Fifteen-year old Ray is living in a life of turmoil. He's constantly fighting with his parents --- especially his father --- in their East London flat. At school, it's even worse. His best friends, Tyrone and Prem, have been kicked out. Then Ray threatens a staff member, and he too is "permanently excluded." The only happiness the boys have is listening to music and spending time at the local music shop. The store is run by an older Jamaican, who they affectionately call "Marga Man."

Once the boys are no longer in school, they get into even more trouble on the streets. The reality of their situation hits hard when they are thrown in jail for fighting in a public park, which only angers their parents further. When the school board contacts their families, it seems as if there is only one solution. The boys have been invited to join an alternative education program targeted towards what interests them most: music. All of their studies will be focused on music and the music industry. As part of this experience, they are to work in an actual recording studio. Although some of their parents are hesitant at first, the boys give it a shot.

With Marga Man as their manager, the boys create a rap group called the Positive Negatives. They are swept up into the music industry and become superstars practically overnight. They record an album, perform on television, and are selling out live concerts. At this point, the plot seems to go off track, like a train running out of control. In the first part of the book, the reader is drawn in slowly by the characters of Ray, Tyrone and Prem. As the music takes over their lives, the plot speeds up on overdrive, and the subtleties of each teen are lost.

And then, in an odd and almost confusing twist of events, the issue of gang warfare comes into the story. The Positive Negatives are first being harassed and then attacked by unknown gang members. Now, they struggle to deal with both their fame and the world of the cruel streets.

Author Benjamin Zephaniah is a poet and performing artist in England. His poetry is displayed in the rap lyrics that are scattered throughout this work. If you want to learn more about the world of the rap music industry, then GANGSTA RAP is the book for you.

8 Mile for TEENS!

This book definately sets the tone as a great comparison to 8 Mile. Parents should know that this book has strong language but provides an excellent storyline of three boys entering the wonderful and at points violent world. A grreat novel!

Gangsta Rap

Our story begins with a shouting match between Ray and his dad. This scene displays the anger, tension and miscommunication that propels Ray and his friends Prem and Tyrone to act irrationally and rudely. RaLater tht morning, Ray explodes on his teacher and threatens him, I guess carrying on the anger from home. Ray is permanently excluded from school as Prem and Tyrone already have been. We don't really get to the root of Ray's anger. We know that his dad drinks a lot, has a temper and doesn't understand his son. We know that his mom does everything she can to hold the family together. At a final meeting before the boys are given their walking papers, they're given the option of attending an alternative school. It's a very new school, the mothers are skeptical, but it is seems to be their only hope of getting a diploma for their sons.

This school will build a curriculum around students career interests and for these boys, it's hip hop music.

At this point, it's easy to think that the boy's main problem is a lack of male presence. While a poor relationship with their dad is a crucial part of the story (because little is more important to young men than their relationship with their dad) there is an abundance of men supporting these boys. Manga Man, a local record shop owner is their surrogate dad and manager. School administrators, business people and musicians all work with the boys to help them finish their education while they begin a hip hop career. Despite all that is being done to help them, the boys manage to maintain rather surly attitudes.

Almost too quickly, the boys release a successful CD. While they don't get the glamour and bright lights that most Americans expect, they do begin to get attention and realize they have to surround themselves with people they can trust. They've been educated about the music business and are aware of contracts, obligations and all the work involved with maintaining success. They are also well read on hip hop, knowing its origins, messages and format. They want to be true British hip hop stars. The down sounds of the industry are presented, as the boys are dangerously used just for the money they generate. This bit of suspense is good for moving the story along.

I didn't really like these boys. I was glad to see them successful and did see them grow up a little bit, but they were not developed enough for me to understand and accept them. I would like to think that young people can be successful without having to limit their development by focusing on a career that may or may not be successful and I found their poor attitudes towards every adult unjustified. I do think the story will give young people a lot to consider and more than that, it will give them hope of succeeding with their own dreams.

An excellent source for further study

I disagree with the previous reviewer in his assertion that this book is ideal for a high school class. While the principles presented are certainly at that level, the verbiage and approach is well beyond most high school students' levels. I do agree that the book lacks breadth, but I believe that it is an intentional choice by the author. To delve more deeply into any one of the chapters would require every chapter be expanded, which would be a much larger finished product, thereby eliminating the purpose of this book as an introduction or overview.

Martin does a good job of taking the main areas of relevance and providing a wealth of scriptural and literary sources in order for the student to saturate himself in the subject matter. I am pleased at how thorough this little book is, and how it lacks obvious denominational bias. The scriptures are the primary source for the text.

That being said, the "early church" pretty much stops at the end of the New Testament. For a more thorough look at history of church music and worship, I recommend Te Deum: The Church and Music.

An Overly Simplistic Picture, but not a Bad Start.

Dr. Martin has provided us with a good, solid, although less than profound, primer on early Christian worship. This is the right book for high-school-age Sunday School classes, and for adults begin initial studies on the Christian liturgies. This text is insufficient, however, for more advanced reading.
With a well crafted vocabulary, a solid understanding of the subject matter, and an obvious infusion of Dr. Martin's own, deep faith, this is a delightful book.
Its only short-fall is that Dr. Martin paints the image of early Christian unity in faith, doctrine, and practice with too wide a brush. Thus, we read "The Resurrection is by common consent the decisive element in THE kerygma..." (p. 75, emphasis mine), even though James D.G. Dunn (Unity and Diversity in the New Testament: An Inquiry into the Character of Earliest Christianity, Trinity Press 1990) and others have argued conclusively for multiple kerygmata in the earliest Church. In fact, for 49 pages (124-173) Dunn demonstrates explicitly and convincingly the complex variety in early Christian worship and sacramental practice. Martin, on the other hand, paints a rather flat image of an unified Church in which all the faithful believed the same doctrines, adhered to the "Didache," and smoothed over the differences between the synoptic Gospels, the Gospel according the Saint John, and the Pauline Epistles.
Dr. Martin's book is an excellent place to begin a study of the Christian liturgies, especially if the reader remembers that it is only a starting point.

You cannot imagine how valuable this book can be; nearly 100 graphs and tables packed into 124 fun to read pages!

Don Wheeler, former colleague of W. Edwards Deming, explains how VERY SIMPLE statistics can transform any business process.

As a young boy in Tennessee, I sometimes uncovered "white lightning" (moonshine whiskey) hidden in forests. MIght his East Tennessee roots give Wheeler his rare sense of humor and fascination with how data and KPI's can be used to "cheat?"

This book is very rich in actual examples of data being used to mislead as well as KPI's which actually promote THE OPPOSITE behavior intended.

Wheeler takes the reader through multiple "cycles of learning" in this short read which is easily completed in under 2 hours on a flight. But be warned; once you read this book you will want to reread it and apply the lessons many times.

Are your processes "predictable" or are they "unpredictable?" With his jargon free, reader friendly style, Wheeler explains clearly 3 kinds of "Voice of the Customer" specifications, as well as sharing multiple examples and pitfalls which leaders make converting data into knowledge.

If you suffer from "rare" but important defects, be sure to read the next to last chapter. Brilliant!

The cases on pages 86 and 131 will inspire you to gain new insights building on the easily understandable histograms.

A must read for any Lean Six Sigma Executive, Sponsor or Belt. I buy this book in boxes of 10; I often find my colleagues and contacts asking to have my copy!

Confused When Others Talk About Data?

I wish economists and journalists and other leaders would read books like Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. Today the news is that unemployment claims went up, for the first time in 3 weeks. Analysts are now speculating that maybe the recovery is not as strong as it appears.

Excuse me. What are you saying? Are you saying that one upward blip can be extrapolated into a trend? Are you saying that because we flipped a coin 3 times and got heads (unemployment going down), and now we got a tail (unemployment going up) that our coin is defective? Are you saying that because temperatures were warmer than usual last week that we won't have winter?

One data point does not make a trend. We can't say the recovery is soft unless we know what the normal variation is on the out-of-work claims from week to week. Any result from week to week is going to be up or down (like heads or tails). Just because it goes up doesn't mean that a trend has reversed, when we didn't have a significant trend in the first place. 3 weeks of claims going down, analogous to coin flipping, could happen 1 in 8 times. The chance of it going down a fourth time is 1 in 16, unless there's a change in the system that creates unemployment claims (or better, creates jobs). Until we get to the odds of 1 in 64 (6 weeks in a row in the same direction--or some say, 1 in 256 is less risky for identifying a false trend) we can't say that we had an unemployment trend at all.

Please, Mr/Ms Economist and Mr/Ms Journalist, don't get confused and become Chicken Little thinking the economic sky is falling based on one piece of data that was going to show up normally. Read Wheeler's book to better understand all this.

I know kung fu

After reading this book (only took a couple of evenings) I feel like Keanu Reaves in The Matrix.

I've been studying Dr. Deming's system of profound knowledge, and the bit about understanding variation has been on my TODO list. This book nailed it with a crystal clear introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC), which Dr. Deming promoted based on his learnings from statistician Walter Shewhart when they worked together at Bell Labs. As Dr. Deming pointed out, an eighth-grader could do this; it's not supposed to be hard, so take the negative reviews of this book with a grain of salt. If you already understand and use SPC, you won't gain nearly as much from this book as a newbie like myself.

I remember reading Deming's Out of the Crisis and thinking that the terminology around SPC could easily be confused. "Control" is a very loaded term. Dr. Wheeler has come up with a new terminology, replacing "Control" with "Predictability", among other things. This is going to make it much easier for me to talk about without creating misconceptions.

Thanks Dr. Wheeler for making this topic so approachable and for framing it in such a compelling way, and for not being afraid to promote an entirely new terminology even when your book publishing company is known as "SPC Publishing". This reinforces your own personal belief in continual improvement.

The Steingass Comprehensive Persian-English Dictionary

Steingass's dictionary is a useful tool for all those studying the Persian language, and in particular to those more interested in poetry and classical Persian. This comprehensive dictionary includes not only words and phrases, but also pronunciation aids (especially important for reading poetry). There are words in the dictionary which are not usually used in modern Persian, but on the whole it is an important and significant tool for Persian researchers and students.

advice on editions

The Librairie Du Liban edition seems best for anyone who consults Steingass frequently. It's much larger than the Indian reprints, with big, clear type, and decent paper. The binding is tough, too. I carried my copy in a backpack for close to a year in Central Asia and it's still tight. For me the hard copy is easier to use than U Chicago's online version. Worth paying double or triple the price of the wretched and tiny AES edition, if you can find it.

My way or the highway

Let me first say I am a practitioner in a community clinic and believe in this method. I also feel there is a place for private acupuncture.
Many of us have worked long and hard and spent a good deal of money for an education in this field and $60, to me, is worth a private treatment. Should there be an alternative available? Yes, which is why I do both.
I understand that the author is against traditional chinese diagnosis but using the same 20 points for every condition is ridiculous. What sets us apart from western medicine is that we take time to listen to the patient and treat them accordingly, not a "hey how are ya, what hurts? ok here are some needles." A chimp can do that. What sets us apart is that we treat the person, not the symptom. These "ridiculous questions" we ask are there for a reason...every person is different.
This book could have been a really good learning tool. The points are great, but the message was preachy and sounded like a manifesto.
Also, for someone wanting to reach the working class $28.00 is a little steep for a 130 page book.

Good read for any acupuncturist

I am still in acupuncture school and this book was a totally different view than anything we are taught in school. I am doing one of my clinical rotations in community clinic, hence why I read this book. The only issues I have with the book are on the level of community acupuncture as a whole, not with the book as a book. I do think Lisa has a very "black & white" view of either you do community acupuncture or you do zen-spa/white coat acupuncture; and to her, never the two should meet or it ruins everything. I think that is a bit biased although I appreciate the concept of making acupuncture more easily available to more people from a financial standpoint. However, sometimes I get cynical and think back to the last public service profession I was in, and I have to ask myself, are most of the people who only want to pay $10 for an acupuncture treatment actually wanting to take responsibility for their health, make changes, and do some work on themselves or are they there because they want someone else to do the work for them??? I'm sure there are both in reality. At the same time, I tend to recall a wise man once saying that people don't truly appreciate what they do not have to pay for; and again, I ask myself the same question. All in all, it was a good, thought provoking read and has some great tidbits of wisdom regardless of what business model someone decides to follow. The red raised communist fist is a little disturbing though...makes the noodles a bit less appealing.

This book is awesome.

I was unhappy practicing private room acupuncture and charging the market rate. When I read Acupuncture is Like Noodles, I laughed out loud many times with relief and joy that there was a way I could practice acupuncture that made so much more sense to me. Lisa is a superb writer, she has a way of presenting information so that anyone, coming from any point of view, will get it. Reading this book changed my life, it was a major turning point for me.
