PreTest Pharm

If you're looking for high-quality review questions to supplement your studying, this is the book. Question stems are clinicaly-oriented and do a great job of giving you a sense of both the scenarios in which a drug is likely to be used and just how the side effects actually manifest. Explanations are thorough and address not only the correct answer but rather all of the options with adequate depth such that they still have much to teach even if you get the question right. This is great if used in the early stages of studying. For pharm there is currently no other book like this one and I'm extremely glad I have it as part of my study arsenal!

An Example Question

The questions range from easy to challenging. The answers are very well written. All answers reference pages from these two textbooks:
Brunton L, Lazo J, Parker K, eds. Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 11th ed. McGraw-Hill; 2006.
Katzung BG, Masters SB, Trevor AJ, eds. Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, 11th ed. McGraw-Hill; 2009.
You can maximise your effectiveness of this book by reading the relevant chapters from either of the two texts above, then answering the questions found here.
A specific comment on the Kindle for Android version: The questions are separated from the answers, and there is no link between them in the text. For example, all the questions for one topic will be together, then the answers will be at the end of that chapter. The only way for you to navigate between questions and answers is to go back to the table of contents and select the appropriate link there. Because of this you ideally want to use this book with two Kindle-enabled devices at the same time. That way you can read the question on one device, then immediately read the answer on the other device. This is particularly important when you are reviewing the answers after having attempted all of the questions. When checking the answers you do need to re-read the original question to fully understand where you went wrong, and this is made impossibly difficult with just one Kindle device.
Finally, the preview of the book does not give a good example of what the question and answers are like. Here is one random example of both a question and an answer taken from the book:
Question 385. A patient develops marked skeletal muscle tetany soon after a recent thyroidectomy. The attending confirms the diagnosis, in part, by lightly tapping the patient's cheek in front of the ear. Stimulating the facial nerves in this manner leads to spasms of the local (oris) muscle (Chvostek sign). Which of the following drugs is most likely to be chosen to manage this adverse response to surgery?
a. Calcitonin
b. Calcium gluconate
c. Plicamycin (mithramycin)
d. PTH (parathyroid hormone)
e. Vitamin D
Answer
The answer is b. (Brunton, p 1663. Katzung, pp 754-758, 763.) We're dealing with hypocalcemia in this patient with tetany postthyroidectomy, because the parathyroid gland was damaged or removed during the surgery. Administration of intravenous calcium gluconate would immediately correct the tetany. Parathyroid hormone (d) could be considered appropriate for long-term management of hypocalcemia, but it has a slower onset of action that would not be of much help in a tetanic state. We would then probably use vitamin D (e) and dietary modifications for long-term control of plasma calcium levels. Calcitonin (a) is a hypocalcemic antagonist of parathyroid hormone. (Note that calcitonin or calcitriol will raise plasma calcium levels faster than vitamin D, but in this emergent situation they will not work fast enough, which is why we need direct administration of ionic calcium.) Plicamycin (c; mithramycin) is used to treat Paget disease and hypercalcemia. The dose employed is about one-tenth the amount used for plicamycin's cytotoxic action when it is used as a chemotherapeutic drug.

I feel that it gives me a great overview on what Step 1 will find important and helps solidify points that I've learned in class. I use it during each exam set when I am studying for the exam just to make sure I have everything down.
